Drug Agents Take Down Major Drug Cartel in Utah

Paul Warner/U.S. Attorney for Utah:" WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DO IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN...TO SEND THE MESSAGE...DON'T BRING THAT GARBAGE INTO UTAH."

U.S. and Mexican drug agents take down a major Mexican drug cartel, sending 240 people to jail, including some drug dealers right here in Utah.

The Drug Enforcement Agency says it was one of the world's most potent drug smuggling rings.

But, after 19 months, Operation Trifecta cut off a large pipeline of illegal drugs.

Among those busted, 18 people who were pumping meth and cocaine into the Salt Lake Valley.

News Specialist Jed Boal joins us live with the details.

Operation Trifecta targeted an alleged drug kingpin in Mexico and his operation that moved drugs throughout the U.S.

According to these Utah indictments, that cartel was moving 10 pounds of meth and 11 pounds of cocaine into the valley every ten days.

This Mexico City raid netted several top lieutenants of drug kingpin Ismael Zambada-Garcia, but the leader himself slipped away.

The DEA says the Zambada cartel funneled drugs from Colombia into Mexico and on to the U.S. through cross-border tunnels.

Operation Trifecta seized nearly six tons of cocaine, 100 pounds of methamphetamine, 25-thousand pounds of marijuana and 8.4 million dollars from the alleged smugglers.

Some of those drugs were bound for Utah.

Paul Warner/U.S. Attorney for Utah:"ALTHOUGH THIS WAS A NATIONAL OPERATION...CLEARLY THE IMPACT OF THE OPERATION WAS HEAVY HERE IN UTAH."

These drugs were seized in Utah, before reaching their final destination in Kearns.

Operation Full House in Utah was a multi-agency investigation headed by the DEA Metro Task Force.

The meth and cocaine started in Mexico, came through Los Angeles, before it was brought to Utah.

According to the indictment, Hipolito Lopez and his Chief of Operations Pedro Luis Lopez brought the drugs to Kearns, six dealers are charged with distributing the drugs.

Paul Warner/U.S. Attorney for Utah:" WE ARE GOING TO PUT A TEMPORARY DENT IN THE SUPPLY. WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO IS SHOW A CONTINUING COMMITMENT TO STOP THE SCOURGE OF THIS STUFF COMING INTO OUR STATE."

The indictment also targets three businesses in Kearns and one in Salt Lake City, in which the owners took part in or knew about the drug dealing, the U.S. Attorney aims to seize two of those businesses.

In all there are 16 drug charges against 18 people, 12 of whom have been arrested in the last 24 hours.

All but two face federal drug dealing charges that could land them in prison for decades.
