Meth sting sends Salt Lake City, Utah family to prison

A Salt Lake City, Utah couple have been sentenced to federal prison as a result of a two-year investigation into what prosecutors called "a large methamphetamine operation" that involved several family members, Utah authorities said Thursday.
Scott Hemsley, 32, was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison earlier this month after pleading guilty to conspiracy to manufacture meth and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, said Salt Lake County, Utah prosecutor Clark Harms, who was serving as an assistant special U.S. attorney in the case. Hemsley's wife, Krystal, also 32, was sentenced to three years in prison for conspiracy and maintaining a place for the manufacture of meth.
The Hemsleys were among eight people indicted in February 2002, U.S. District Court records show. A ninth defendant was prosecuted in 3rd District Court, Harms said.
The Hemsleys and others purchased precursor chemicals to make meth at the Hi-Valley Chemical shop in Salt Lake City, Utah prosecutors said. While executing a search warrant at the Hemsleys' home, police found a working meth lab, along with firearms, precursor chemicals and large amounts of the drug.
A 12-year-old girl living at the home was taken into state custody and is now living with other relatives.
Other defendants in the case included a man who was living at the home and Krystal Hemsley's mother, brother, sister-in-law, aunt and cousin. They received prison sentences ranging from 11 years to slightly more than a year, Harms said. The cousin's husband is serving a 15-year prison sentence.
